Born in 1901 in Spring eld, Massachusetts under the name the Hendee Manufacturing company, Indian was the first American motorcycle brand, two years before Harley davidson. that took the name of The Indian motorcycle (without ' r ' "") company in 1923, is the work, or rather, the masterpiece, George M. Hendee and carl Oscar Hedström, two pioneers, imaginative and bold.
Two great inventors build in 1906 the first American industry V-twin, cubant 633 cc and engage him in competition. George Holden and Luis J. Mueller commute from San Francisco to New york in 31 days without incident, thus beating the previous record of more than 18 days.
In 1911, Indian won the first 3 places of the famous Tourist Trophy at a time where the brand has established itself as the largest automaker world.
Indian has democratized the loop frame (the frame looped with tank on the beam before horizontal), the handful of accelerator, the lighthouse, the electric starter, the leaf, the primary waterproof carters spring suspension aluminium while developing its high-performance technology to four valves per cylinder.
The race, which allows the mechanics to fulfil, forge his legend, with countless records, like the San-Francisco-New york in 20 days in 1911, passing the bar of the 190 mph in 1918.
Indian brings its production to 40 000 motorcycles in 1920
Suite de l'histoire
In 1937, Ed Kretz won the first edition of the 200 Miles of daytona (despite 2 falls). Indian asserts itself as the metal are made heroes!
After the war, Indian Motorcycle is struggling to find its place in the public market. Chief®, abandoned for a year, is reintroduced in 1951 with a powerful model of 1 300 cm3 (80 po3), but sales continue to decline and Indian must stop production in 1953.
In 1967, Burt Munro, 68 years (!) reached 295 mph on the Salt Lake Bonneville to the handlebars of his Indian Scout. A record barely exceeded since (296 kph in 2014).
The legend suite
2011. Polaris Industries rachète la marque. 2013.
